Mein Gmüth ist mir verwirret

Church goers know the melody as "O Sacred Head Now Wounded" [O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden], and rock fans know the melody as Paul Simon's "American Tune."  The original actually came from Germany about the year 1601, and it was a love song.  Here's the translation of the original German by Hans Leonard Hassler.  (The English one is my own as well, and you can find an Esperanto one on my Esperanto blog.)

Mi menta habe turba—
Qe fe fu este filo?
Mi freqe vaga kine.
Mi kardia habe algo.
Mi dic a se kritici.
Ne es plu sonia ci.
U-ci du sti lakrima.
Es zero spe pro mi.

Mi volu; fe fu dice
U qestio a mi
Klu de mi forti tristi.
Mi volu dic a fe;
Mi este tali kalma,
Si mi fu dic a fe;
Fe est excesi solo,
E dona alg a mi.

Fe habe veri kali
E splendi panto-lo.
Ne es u tali gina
Ko gluko is u-fe.
Plus inter panto gina
Ma kura es in fe.
Es hedo minus fini,
Tem mi du vide fe.

Ne es u veri stori
De gina iso fe.
Fe es u maxi boni.
Mi simpli volu; fe
Fu monstra holo filo
E kura klu a mi.
Po-co mi forti algo
Fu gene mut a spe.

Mi este no-sucede
E tristi panto-kron.
Ko panto-ra ge-cedi,
U maxi algo es:
Pro fe es zero funktio—
Fe este ne de mi.
Mi ski; Teo fu apo
Mi algo tel ab mi.

Now in my mind I'm troubled-
What makes a woman care?
My heart is beating double,
I feel lost everywhere.
At night I get no sleeping
With my heart's great complaint;
It's sighing and it's weeping
And in despair and pain.

Oh, that she would ask me
Just what could be the cause.
I want to tell her freely
I ache for her because
I know she's lonely often.
This silence wounds me so!
If her heart I could soften
All would be well, I know.

To see how splendid she is
And always beautiful;
And for as nice as she is
To her there's no equal.
Compared with other women
She always takes the prize.
To see her is believing
That I'm in paradise.

I simply cannot tell all
Her beauty and her care;
How can one measure them all?
If only she would dare
To make her heart and love plain
And turn herself to me.
Then would my sorrow and pain
Turn into ecstasy.

But I must give up striving
And for a time feel sad,
As if life's not worth living—
The greatest pain I've had—
Though I am not right for her,
And she cannot be mine,
Through God's almighty power
I'll see a better time.
